MOVE THESE QUES/ANS TO FAQ SECTION
Stay cool. Storing and sending your soil sample is easy.
So you’ve followed our step-by-step guide to taking a soil sample. All that’s left to do is send your sample to our lab team at UWA in Perth – free of charge, of course. But in the meantime, it’s important that you get your sample into a freezer.
Why store your soil sample in the freezer?
Chilling your sample halts any additional growth of microbes and ensures the soil remains in prime condition for analysis. Ideally, try to put your sample in a freezer within six hours of collection, although a fridge will do as an alternative.
How to store your sample.
Simply place the two small DNA sample tubes and the small bag of mixed soil into the larger plastic bag. Then, using the second cable tie, seal the larger plastic bag and place it in a freezer (or fridge, if you don’t have a freezer available). Keep your shipping form safe – we suggest you put it inside the pre-paid post pack for safe-keeping.
What if you don’t have access to a fridge or freezer?
If you’re travelling or sampling in a remote area where you don’t have access to a fridge or freezer, don’t worry – keep the sample cool and get it into a fridge or freezer within a day or so. The important thing is to keep it below room temperature and send it to us as soon as possible.
Ready to send your soil sample us? It’s easy.
The sooner you can send your sample to us, the better. When you’re ready, take your sample out of cold storage and place the following items in the addressed, pre-paid post pack:
What happens next?
Once we’ve received your sample, our lab team will get to work on DNA sequencing. You can also help us by spreading the word and sharing your MicroBlitz experience with your friends and family. The more citizen scientists we can recruit, the more comprehensive and useful our state-wide survey will be.
